Defensive Pistol Skills Assessment
Deputy U.S. Marshal Mike Thompson was able to consistently pass his firearms qualification but questioned his actual ability to use his revolver to save his life. He requested and received additional training, measurably improving his skills. On March 9, 1988, Deputy Marshal Thompson found himself between two armed individuals who were attempting to free a prisoner he was escorting. One armed assailant was in front, one in back. Marshal Thompson waited for an opening, and when it came, he drew and neutralized both subjects. He survived, they didn’t. He credited his survival to the additional training he received.
